After two weeks freezing upon returning from the Tucson show, I have gone ice fishing for two days at the gorge. Ice is six inches thick now where last year was over 20 inches thick. We may be loosing our ice sooner than later. Fishing dates are February 20 and 21, 2009. Open water between Buckboard Marina and Jap Island, the Big Bend area. On the ice again, what a great feeling out fishing in sunny Wyoming. Here's a nice fat rainbow. Good Eats! A scrappy trio of Friday fishes. February 20th. I lost 8. Although not limiting out, the fishing was easy.
On Saturday the 21st it was up to 50 degrees at my "secret spot" fishing hole. I just knew I was going to have a second great day on the ice.
0 wind!!! Real nice weather for the day's outing. On the trip down to the gorge I see a wild longhorn standing still for a photo. I have a mouth full of cookies as I wait for the fish to bite. All lines are baited and set. We can use six lines during the special ice regulations period. It does make the fishing more interesting. Here I drink a cup of freshly brewed coffee and continue to pass time by feeding my face and watching for some action on the ice. Some fruit hits the spot while we wait for fishing action. I saw fresh river otter tracks, three golden eagles, a few mule deer, and some crows.  Cooking up "viddles" for a great sandwich while we wait. Spices, a little mustard, campfire smoke, hot coffee, all the right ingredients! I ended up eating three sandwiches to pass the time..and to feed my obviously large tape worm:-) Cooking more coffee. Being full and loaded up on caffeine and now ready to catch some fish. More inspecting the fishing tackle. All is ready! All six lines ready for a fish attack.
 Here we have an opportunity to ice a fish. I could not capitalize on this one, or any one today.
YES, EVEN US GREAT FISHERMEN GET SKUNKED SOME DAYS. The weather and the feast made up for the lack of fish............almost! Score: Fish 4 bites, me, zero! This is some very poor ice. Not very strong to look at it. Note the crystalization falling off the edge.
I hope you enjoyed this fishing episode. The gorge is normally very good fishing for me. Please be safe if you go out on the ice now, it is getting soft.
